J. Conn Scott to close Selbyville store after more than a century
Third-generation furniture retailer begins total liquidation May 29

SELBYVILLE, Del. (May 28, 2025) — After 101 years, family-owned furniture retailer J. Conn Scott is preparing to close the doors of its flagship Selbyville store. Final liquidation at the century-old store begins May 29. The Rehoboth store will remain open as an interior design center.

J. Conn Scott was founded in 1924 by James Conn Scott, who laid the foundation for what would become a three-generation legacy of exemplary service in furnishing homes with high quality merchandise. Passed down to his son, William, and now owned by grandson Richard and his wife, Lisa, the company has grown from modest beginnings into a pillar of the communities it served.

“We’re deeply thankful to our loyal customers, dedicated staff, and everyone who has been part of the J. Conn Scott story,” said Richard. “While it’s not easy to close this chapter, we’re proud of the legacy we’ve built together.”

J. Conn Scott opens to the public its store-closing sale on May 29 at 6 East Church St. The 34,000-square-foot showroom is filled with high-quality designer furniture and heirloom rugs from around the world, all available at deep discounts and priced to move quickly. Home accessories will be discounted 50%. Featured brands include Bernhardt, Braxton Culler, Century, Chateau d’Ax, Craftmaster, EJ Victor, Fjords, Hancock & Moore, Hickory Chair, Hooker Furniture, Howard Miller, Lee, Lillian August, Mayo, Ralph Lauren Home, Soft Line, Southern Motion, and Wesley Hall.

The closing of the Selbyville store represents a significant moment in a story that began more than a century ago, when James Conn Scott drew on his experience in the family’s general store to launch his own furniture business. J. Conn Scott was then shaped and expanded by his son, William, whose creative vision and eye for detail helped define the store’s aesthetic and reputation for attentive service. William worked alongside his son Richard for about a decade before retiring in 1995. He remained a guiding presence until his passing in 2023. During their time together, William and Richard opened a second location in Rehoboth Beach to serve a growing coastal clientele. Now in its third generation of leadership under Richard and Lisa, the business continues to reflect the family’s enduring values and vision.

During its liquidation sale, J. Conn Scott will have extended store hours of 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10a.m.–6 p.m. on Saturday; and 12p.m.–5 p.m. on Sunday.
